QuickTime is a multiplatform media handling technology available from Apple Computer, and can be used to stream video content to any Macintosh or Windows PC.
1. Download and Install QuickTime
QuickTime is available for download from the QuickTime download site: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/. Download the installer and follow the on-screen instructions for the installation process.
2. Add QuickTime Player To FireWall Exemptions
Locate and open the installed QuickTime Player application, and ensure that it is added as an exemption to the computer's FireWall. To do this, follow these instructions:
Windows XP:
In Microsoft Windows XP, quicktime must be added to the list of exemptions for the Windows FireWall. To do this, go to the "Windows Firewall" control panel and in the "Exemptions" tab ensure that QuickTime is in the list and checked. If it is not in the list, click "Add Program..." button and in the resulting window click "Browse...". Navigate to the quicktime program directory (My Computer / Local Disk C: / Program Files / QuickTime) and select the "QuickTimePlayer" application. Click "Open", and then click "Ok", and with the program now in the exemptions list ensure it is checked.
Click the Windows icon or this link for detailed instructions.
Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard":
In Macintosh OS X Leopard, users should open the "System Preferences" and select the "Security" preference pane. Then in the "Firewall" tab ensure "Set access for specific services and applications" allows connections with quicktime. To do this, click the "+" button and select the QuickTime Player application from the resulting file browser window. Click "Add" and next to the QuickTime application in the list, ensure "Allow incoming connections" is selected.
Click the Apple icon or this link for detailed instructions.
3. Open Video Stream in QuickTime
The links for the video streams are located under the event summaries on the Events page. Upon clicking the movie icon QuickTime should open and users should then enter the CVS streaming username and password if prompted. Usernames and passwords can be obtained from the CVS web administrator by emailing cvsadmin@ucdavis.edu.
NOTE: Router/FireWall ports.
QuickTime streaming might not work behind some home firewalls and routers. Users may need to access their router's firewall settings and turn on port triggering or otherwise open port 554 which is used for QuickTime streaming. The instructions listed in this page are for the Windows or Macintosh firewall, but users should consult their router's documentation to ensure their broadband router is set up properly to allow inbound traffic on port 554. Additionally, if the firewall has "SPI" (Secure Packet Inspection) enabled, this might interfere with QuickTime streams, and it is recommended to disable this feature.
